How to install beta apps on Android

This how-to described how to change the settings of your Android phone or tablet to allow the installation of beta apps from HockeyApp. The document is organized by Android version and device. The name of the setting might differ on other devices, but the general steps should be similar.

Android 2.1 (Motorola DROID / Milestone)

  1. Open the app drawer
  2. Open the Settings app
  3. Tap on "Applications"
  4. Enable the checkbox for "Unknown sources"
  5. Confirm the warning with "OK"

Android 2.2 (HTC Desire)

  1. Open the app drawer
  2. Open the Settings app
  3. Tap on "Applications"
  4. Enable the checkbox for "Unknown sources"
  5. Confirm the warning with "OK"

Android 2.3 (Samsung Galaxy Tab)

  1. Open the app drawer (tap on "Applications" in the dock)
  2. Open the Settings app
  3. Tap on "Applications"
  4. Enable the checkbox for "Unknown sources"
  5. Confirm the warning with "Yes"

Android 3.2 (Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1)

  1. Tap on the clock in the lower right corner
  2. Tap on "Settings"
  3. Tap on "Applications"
  4. Enable the checkbox for "Unknown sources"
  5. Confirm the warning with "OK"

Android 4.0 (Samsung Galaxy Nexus)

  1. Open the app drawer
  2. Open the Settings app
  3. Tap on "Security"
  4. Enable the checkbox for "Unknown sources"
  5. Confirm the warning with "OK"

Kindle Fire

  1. Tap the gear icon in the top status bar
  2. Tap on "More…"
  3. Tap on "Device"
  4. Set "Allow Installation of Applications" to "ON"
  5. Confirm the warning with "OK"
